The project was implemented by the TEMA Foundation to support producers in Hatay province after the February 6 earthquake affecting 11 provinces and causing great losses. Preliminary work for the rural development project began in 2023 in order to implement a more comprehensive project in the period of 2024-2026.
Launched to support producers affected by the earthquake in Hatay, the project aims to increase soil management, plant nutrition and irrigation efficiency without loss of yield with correct applications in 5 different vegetable gardens where irrigated farming is made. 5 villages will be selected in the Antakya Amik Plain for the implementation.
In 2023, as part of the preliminary work on the project, a garden was selected for piloting. In this garden, sample application activities were carried out to increase plant nutrition planning and irrigation water efficiency in irrigated farming areas where vegetables are grown.
In 2024, a plant nutrition program based on soil analysis and sample applications for water holding in the soil (compost + irrigation based on soil moisture monitoring) were carried out in 5 vegetable gardens where capia pepper, squash, watermelon, eggplant and ornamental pepper were grown. With irrigation based on soil moisture monitoring, an average of 22% savings were achieved in irrigation without any loss in yield.
63 producers were reached with 4 trainings on topics such as irrigation, plant nutrition and compost, and 15 producers were reached with 1 garden day organized to demonstrate the effects of correct application on site.
