What Citizens Should Do

  • In case of fire, the Emergency Hotline 112 or Forest Fire Hotline 177 should be called immediately to report the fire
  • If the fire is at the initial stage, the first intervention should be made to extinguish it, if the fire has grown, it should never be directly intervened in the fire
  • During the fire, vehicles should never go to the area where the fire broke out and should not make it difficult for fire extinguishing vehicles to go to the site
  • In case of panic, vehicles should not try to escape from the fire area by using the forest road, keeping in mind that the roads may be closed due to fire, smoke or a fallen tree
  • If the fire is close to residential areas, gardens and houses bordering the forest should be wetted as much as possible
  • In case of evacuation, the evacuation commands of the authorities should be followed, and a fire evacuation bag should always be kept ready for evacuation in areas with high fire risk
  • If you are close to the sea, you should gather at the seaside at points where boats can pick you up
  • Information from official channels and experts should be followed.

What the Authorities Should Do

  • In order not to narrow the area of interest and concentration of the teams working in the field, there should be no high-level bureaucrats other than the fire chief in the teams that go to the forest fire area as reinforcement
  • In cases requiring evacuation, the fire evacuation plan prepared before the fire should be implemented
  • Vehicles, equipment and personnel reinforcement to the fire zone should be made from areas with low fire risk
  • Law enforcement should keep traffic on roads leading to the fire open and prevent civilian vehicles from traveling to the fire
  • Work in shifts and rest personnel during prolonged fires
  • Uninterrupted medical team should be available at the scene of a forest fire
  • Specialist veterinary teams should be available at the scene of forest fires for the treatment of wild animals damaged by fire, and evacuations should be made when necessary
  • A forest fire communication desk should be established and the media and the public should be informed about the fire daily and hourly by the technical personnel assigned at this desk
  • Forest fire volunteers and military personnel should not be directly assigned to fire fighting
  • The main management of fire extinguishing should be under the authority of the General Directorate of Forestry, AFAD Official and in cases where fire trucks also intervene in the fire, the Fire Brigade official should be present at the Fire Center as an assistant to the fire chief, and should not directly intervene in the fire.
