TEMA, The Turkish Foundation for Combating Soil Erosion, for Reforestation and the Protection of Natural Habitats

What the Authorities Should Do

  • All kinds of data on burned areas should be collected immediately and shared with the public in accordance with the principle of transparency
  • Implementation plans and projects for reforestation areas should be prepared immediately and shared with the public
  • Considering the characteristics of the growing environment (soil, climate, topography), functional studies to be carried out in burned areas should be determined
  • The vegetation analysis, flora and fauna of the site should be taken into consideration, local endemic species should be protected
  • Areas subject to natural rejuvenation should be subject to priority work
  • During the evacuation of burnt material (trees, etc.), sufficient material suitable for wildlife and habitats should be left on the site.
  • The location, intensity and method of tillage activities to be carried out in burned areas should be determined, and erosion measures should be taken in areas with high erosion risk.
  • Difficult to work areas (steep, rocky and stony) and natural forest openings should be left to their natural course
  • The maquis areas should be structurally and functionally restored or subjected to natural rejuvenation as maquis again
  • Seed stocks should be created in appropriate origins in order to be prepared for reforestation efforts after large fires that will occur during the climate change process
  • Germination tests of the seeds taken into stocks should be carried out before stocking
  • In reforestation works, natural rejuvenation should be taken as a basis, natural rejuvenation should be supported by seed supplementation in areas that do not have sufficient seed resources
  • Sowing and planting methods should be used in areas that do not have sufficient seed resources and where natural rejuvenation is not suitable
  • Vegetation that remains unburned during the works and does not interfere with reforestation efforts should be preserved
  • The public should be informed effectively and regularly during the process of reforestation of burnt areas after fire.
