TEMA, The Turkish Foundation for Combating Soil Erosion, for Reforestation and the Protection of Natural Habitats

About the Project

Nature Explorer is an interactive and visual identification guide that allows you to get to know the species of trees and shrubs found in Istanbul and to discover the characteristics of these species closely. The guide helps to identify the observed plant species step by step based on their different parts such as leaves, flowers and fruits. Plant species identified with Nature Explorer can be recorded and a personal observation list can be created. Users can also visualize their observation journey by viewing their observation records on a map. The mobile application, which can be downloaded free of charge from Google Play and Apple Store, includes nearly 250 of the most common tree and shrub species in Istanbul.

What Have We Done So Far?

The Nature Explorer application has nearly 14.000 users and over 400 observations have been entered into the application so far.

Nature Explorer (Doğa Kaşifi) is a smartphone application developed with the support of TEMA Foundation's donor Mr. Turan Demiraslan with the aim of making it easier for everyone living in Istanbul to recognize the diversity of trees and shrubs, which are the main components of biodiversity, and to identify species. Nature Explorer, which is also a citizen science application, is instrumental in recording the biodiversity in the city.
