TEMA, The Turkish Foundation for Combating Soil Erosion, for Reforestation and the Protection of Natural Habitats

Project Duration

January 2012 - December 2015

Scope/Goals

The aim of the project is to prevent erosion in an area of 75.0 ha in Bozdağ region by establishing and planting wider terraces with excavator, to determine the effects of terraces to be established with excavator on plant growth in areas with severe erosion, to share and disseminate the results.

Activities Realised in the Project

In cooperation with the General Directorate of Forestry, a total of 169.5 km of erosion prevention and planting was established on 122 hectares instead of 75 hectares in Bozdağ district of Ödemiş district in İzmir province. Depending on the planting and terrace spacing, a total of 125,000 saplings were planted in the field in 2012, 58,500 of which were larch, 58,500 of taurus cedar and 8,000 of mixed broad-leaved species. The planted saplings were maintained for 3 years. According to the last success rate determination made at the end of the third year, the planting success of the site is 90%.

According to the determination made at the end of the project, the coverage rate of the terraces of the planted species at the end of the third year was 57% in larch and 27% in cedar, depending on the growth rate of the species. Erosion has been taken under control thanks to the vegetation provided by terracing and sapling plantings in the field and natural herbaceous plants settled among the terraces. In the future, as the saplings develop and the coverage increases, the severity of erosion will decrease further. As of the end of 2015, the completed project site was registered as TURAN DEMİRASLAN Memorial Forest within the scope of the protocol signed with Izmir Regional Directorate of Forestry.
